You've got to be careful when you do retro. Faithfulness to the text is everything; not just the form, but the content. But when the past is dug up it's likely to smell a bit, well, old. Focus, of course, did the exhumation job effortlessly with Focus 8 - after all, reviving a template they toured around the world for years wasn't so hard. Van Leer's talent as a tunesmith did the rest. |

Does the Lady Lake name seem familiar to you? Well I suppose it all depends on your situation. If you are Dutch and of a certain age you may recall a band of that name whose debut album, No Pictures, was reissued by Musea back in 1997 (although you'd be unlikely to remember the original release twenty years earlier as there were only a very limited number pressed). If you are from the UK and of an even older age (or a dedicated early 1970s music fan) you may recall the name being the title of the second album by Gnidrolog. Or you just may be a fan of Arthurian legends. Well, Supercleandreammachine (apparently the name of a radio programme) is the second album from the 1970s Dutch group, who do have a connection with Gnidrolog and have no connection (as far as I know) with Lancelot, Guinnivere and their pals. |
Author: Erik Neuteboom - Editor of Prog Archives A few months ago I witnessed a gig from Lady Lake during a Dutch Triple Concert with Knight Area and Plackband. I knew this band from their album "No Pictures" from the Seventies but I was really stunned about new music! The members told me that I had to wait a few months until Musea had released their new album, more than 25 years after their debut LP. This night, after my late shift, I decided to listen to it and then to write this review. Well, I have very good news for you because Lady Lake has delivered a wonderful, very melodic album that will appeal to many progheads. The focus is on the guitar, Fred Rosenkamp has a very melodic and varied style (jazzy, rock, symphonic) with obvious hints from Andy Latimer. The music from Lady Lake often reminds me of Camel (and at some moments Focus), especially the changing climates from mellow to compelling and bombastic featuring sensitive and howling guitar, this man knows how to carry us away to progrock heaven! His interplay with the keyboards from Leender Korstanje (beautiful Hammond organ, piano and some fine Mellotron) is warm, delicate and sometimes very moving and drummer Jan Dubbe does a good job. I use to call this 24- carat symphonic rock, HOLLAND IS BACK ON THE TRACK!! |

What can one expect from a full instrumental progressive band from the 70's, now back in action, with a name that connects to Gnidrolog and some band members that belong to the Gorgg community (Gentle Giant fan base) and that are still deeply influenced by the typical sounding of 70's Dutch and Anglo-Saxon symphonic and canterburian prog?? |

I still remember when I first heard "No Pictures", the self-released 1977 record by Lady Lake, a band coming from Deventer (The Netherlands). The (almost fully) instrumental material has been a personal favourite ever since. When the news arrived that the long awaited follow-up was recorded and scheduled for release in 2005, it merely took some weeks when I heard a complete run of pre-mastered versions of the tracks on "Supercleandreammachine". Around the same time, Fred Rosenkamp, Leendert Korstanje and Jan Dubbe performed the whole album to an audience that seemed to be very overwhelmed by the new material. |
Onder andere Doo Dah Damage (voorheen Do The Dubbe), Ford Theatre en No One Will Ever Know waren al oude bekende van me. |
